Emirates’ 777X Move Killed The A380

The 2013 launch of the 777X at the Dubai Air Show was the catalyst by which the fate of the poor-selling A380 was firmly sealed. Sealed by none other than its biggest customer and operator, Emirates.

Singapore Airlines’ recently selection of the 777-9 further underscores the A380s growing age and economic irrelevance.

Airbus’ open admission to Emirates that it will not proceed with the A380neo didn’t help, however, the airline was astute enough to lock in up to 200 orders for the 777X family.

In Emirates’ planned configuration(s) for the 777X family, the A380 sports significantly higher seat-mile and trip costs against the 777-9.
